Girls have size’s 0-16 (for most stores), and guys don’t have this form of sizing, just the size of their waists.First of all, it’d be easier to purchase jeans from different stores. A US size 2 at one store may not be the same as a US size 2 from another store. However, if you measure at 26 inches at the waist at one store, you’ll most likely still be 26 inches at another store.Secondly, stores wouldn’t have to change their standard of sizings. A size 2 now was a size 8 at some point in history. Again, 26 inches is still 26 inches.
I also think removing the current standard of sizing for girls (sizing 0-16) would be better psychologically for girls.

Not just waist, but inseam really needs to come into play. I’m around average height (5’5”-5’6”), but I have short legs for my height. My inseam is 30”. Most pants (especially in juniors since I pretty much have to shop in juniors in most department stores) tend to be a tad to long, but if I try to get pants in petites, they are always too short. It’s quite frustrating. :/

A men’s 26 inch waist isn’t always 26 inches
